Top Gun: Maverick has crossed another impressive milestone during its theatrical run as it has now officially surpassed Avengers: Infinity War, the sixth highest in domestic box office history by grossing $679 million. It has become the highest grossing film.
As reported by Box Office Mojo, Top Gun: Maverick now sits behind Black Panther’s $700 million and, although that may be a challenge, the sequel to 1986’s Top Gun still has a chance to pass it. There is a chance as it is still racking up ticket sales at the box office.
While this goal may be attainable, it does not have enough momentum to surpass Avatar’s $760 million, Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $804 million, Avengers: Endgame’s $858 million, or Star Wars: The Force Awakens’s $936 million. Might be possible. Even if it ends its run in 6th place, it will clearly be the performance of a lifetime.
Worldwide, Top Gun: Mavericks is currently ranked 13th with $1.3 billion, and sits just behind Avengers: Age of Ultron’s $1.4 billion and Frozen 2’s $1.45 billion.
Top Gun: Maverick will continue to climb into theaters around the world, but fans will own a digital copy of the film on August 23rd. The physical 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release will arrive on November 1. Those who purchase the movie at home will be given more than two hours of bonus material, including the cast’s intensive flight training program, Tom Cruise piloting his own vintage World War II P-51 Mustang, and more.
