Here’s another potential exhibit for the unofficial McDonald’s Museum: Fast food fans are freaking out over a “fossilized” McDonald’s cheeseburger that appeared perfectly preserved despite being left in a car wheel for years, as detailed in a TikTok video with 3.3 million views.
“I’ll never eat McDonald’s again,” user Cameron Holland told News.com.au while describing the so-called fast food fountain of youth.
The Brisbane-based mechanic had reportedly found the rot-resistant burger tucked behind the spare wheel in the trunk of a 12-year-old Toyota Camry he was working on.
He estimated that it was between one to three years old due to the fact that the spare wheel looked like it “had never been moved before.”
Despite supposedly sitting in the trunk for an eternity, the burger shockingly appeared to be “intact as if it was fresh from McDonald’s” save for one minor detail — it was “rock hard like cement,” Holland described.
The gearhead explained in the caption that the petrified meat patty only had a bit of mold and hadn’t even been “eaten by ants.”
“Look at this s–t,” exclaims the vehicle expert in the clip, before testing out the seemingly everlasting nosh by hitting with a hammer.
Instead of turning into mush as a normal burger would, the anomalous meat puck appears to shatter in half like a bathroom tile.
And the meat wasn’t the only thing that appeared to be frozen in amber: The bun also fragmented under the hammer, prompting Holland to analogize it to a “biscuit.”
The seemingly discovery caused social media users to Grimace.
“So concerning that there’s no mold what are we eating,” described one concerned commenter, while another wrote, “I think the craziest part is that bugs won’t eat it.”
“That’s a mcfossil,” quipped a third.
McDonald’s has since defended the allegedly everlasting meat patty, declaring that the burger monger “prides itself on serving up great quality products”.
“Our food is made to be consumed upon purchase or delivery to ensure quality and freshness,” representatives said in a statement to news.com.au.
However, this isn’t the first time a McDonald’s food has demonstrated agelessness.
In 2022, a Washington D.C. receptionist was flabbergasted after discovering that a McDonald’s cheeseburger she kept for five years appeared exactly the same as when she bought it — aside from also being rock hard.
In fact, instances of seemingly decomposition-proof McFoodstuffs have even led people to speculate that the company was using cutting-edge preservatives or even mold-free meat strains.
The fast food firm threw cold water on these speculations in a 2020 statement. In it, they chalked up their products’ longevity to a dry environment that prevents the growth of mold and bacteria.
“Food prepared at home that is left to dehydrate could see similar results,” they argued. “Look closely, the burgers you are seeing are likely dried out and dehydrated, and by no means ‘the same as the day they were purchased.”
