Gen Z model sparks debate after saying millennial fashion ‘staple’ is out

Another day, another Y2K fashion trend up for debate.

One Gen Z model went viral on TikTok after asking if crop tops were out of style.

“I feel like they’re going out of fashion,” Sarah Coomer said in the video. “The reign of the crop tops lasted for so long, like they have been a staple throughout the years.”

Coomer, 19, added, “But I feel like this whole like, classy, sort of sophisticated, kind of old money look is really taking over, and crop tops don’t really fit into that category.”

She continued to say that bodysuits are “apocalyptic” and taking over, and even shirts that end at the hip line and showing a little midriff is much more in fashion than showing the whole stomach in crop tops.

The model claims she’s been wearing crop tops every single day of her life since she turned 14 — even in the dead of winter.

“I have crop sweaters, cropped jackets, my workout clothes are cropped; everything is cropped!” Coomer exclaimed.

She said she’s “willing to start over” but needs to know what’s going to replace the crop top before making any further moves.

The statement led to a fair amount of controversy in the comments, with people who were both pro- and anti-crop top.

“Crop tops will never be out,” one declared.

“I love my crop tops and I will be continuing to wear them, thank you,” another person said.

“I’m so over everything being a crop top! Sometimes I just want a normal T-shirt,” someone countered.

“I don’t like old money style. I love crop tops they make me feel so confident and hot,” another shared.

“As a short torso girl I will not stop wearing crop tops lol,” a user commented.

“I need to wear crop tops in the summer not negotiable,” someone added.

“I feel like too many people will still wear them so they’ll never fully be out,” another pointed out.

But the reemergence of late ’90s, early 2000s fashion is extremely hot, especially when it comes to baby tees — and as one person on Reddit noted, “a baby tee is a crop top, but not all crop tops are baby tees.”

“Some crop tops can be loose. A baby tee is basically what the name says, a shirt for an adult that kinda looks like it’s for a baby bc it’ll be tight and short. The sleeves of these shirts are also usually shorter than a normal t-shirt,” the social media user explained.

As Who What Wear notes, baby tees are cropped T-shirts that are often tight-fitting — but not always — and are a shorter length, typically ending just above the waist.

The main difference between a baby tee and a crop top is that crop tops are intentionally shorter with less material used while baby tees fit like a regular t-shirt, just shrunken down.

Can the crop top really be on its way out when baby tees are on the rise?
