Cheerio is making a huge change to its packaging that fans have wanted for years

Fresh O’s ahead for Cheerios fans.

The iconic whole grain oat-based cereal by General Mills is introducing a change to its cheery yellow cereal boxes, having teamed up with Ziploc to include a resealable bag inside its packaging.

The Ziploc bag tech, called PantrySeal, was created to open just partway across the top of the bag, forming a pour spout. This can then be zipped right back up — no more half-folded cereal bags that inevitably unfurl — and eliminates the problem of cereal that goes stale well before its expiration date, as well as cutting down on clumsy spills.

As of this Tuesday, the new bag-box combos for Cheerios and Honey-Nut Cheerios are now available exclusively at Walmart.com, though they will roll out to other retailers across the country in the coming months, according to a news release.

Per General Mills, both Cheerios and Ziploc had already received countless requests over the years from customers to do something about subpar cereal packaging.

According to a survey conducted by the consumer insights platform Suzy in December of 2025, a whopping 90 percent of cereal consumers utilize clips, cereal containers and even clothespins in the name of keeping their favorite breakfast food fresh.

Emilie Knox, the vice president and business unit director for Cheerios at General Mills, shared that collab would make customers’ lives just a little bit easier.

“Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for, making the whole routine easier and more enjoyable,” Knox said in a statement.

An unidentified Ziploc rep echoed the sentiment.

“Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal is an exciting new expression of what Ziploc Brand can do — bringing our resealable freshness expertise directly into the Cheerios package and Ziploc Brand into the pantry in an entirely new way,” read the bag brand’s statement.

Reactions to the fresh collab between the brands have been largely filled with excitement, though some are side-eyeing that the change has been a long time coming.

“Literally this needs zero marketing,” said one commenter on TikTok creator @girlbosstown’s announcement of the news. “Seeing this in the store, I would immediately choose the brand that ziplocks.”

“I have been saying for YEARS that cereal and chip companies need to do this,” added another snack fan.

“It’s what the people want,” added a third succinct cereal lover.

Though the question of “Why did this take so long?” on X seems to be the overarching sentiment among Cheerios fans, at least the new packaging will now keep their O’s fresh longer.
