This woman’s sex life took a nutty turn.
A 28-year-old woman thought she was allergic to her partner’s sperm when she suffered “vaginal pains and burning” after unprotected sex with her partner. But doctors later discovered it was her allergy to nuts to blame, according to her case published in the medical journal Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.
The unidentified couple from Delaware was trying to conceive a child when the woman noticed that she was suffering from what she believed was vaginitis — a vaginal inflammation that can cause discharge, itching and pain.
On top of the pain, the suspected vaginitis was reducing the woman’s chances to get pregnant.
The worried woman spoke with her medical team when she told them that she only suffered after her partner ejaculated inside her without a condom, leading to several tests for infections.
The test all came back negative prompting the medical team to test for human seminal plasma (HSP) hypersensitivity — an allergy to the protein in sperm.
Doctors noted that the woman had previously-detected peanut and tree nut allergies and instructed the couple to attempt having unprotected sex again after the man eliminated all nuts from his diet.
After testing the elimination diet, the couple was happy to report that the issues no longer persisted and were able to carry on with their healthy sex life.
The case study did not however note how often the man had previously consumed nuts, how long before sex he had consumed them or how long he waited to flush them out of his system.
Nearly 3% of adults in the United States, or 4.5 million people, are allergic to peanuts, according to a study published by the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
While being exposed to an allergy through ejaculation is rare, it has happened before.

She has since been spreading a warning to others about the dangers of sexually transmitted food allergies — especially from a peanut-loaded penis.
