He puts sweat, tears — and his own blood — into his work.
Filipino painter Elito Circa, 52, grew up so poor he used plums and tomatoes to make art.
When he got scraped as a youngster, he even tried using blood to paint with, and got hooked.
“Every time I got scraped, I would use my own blood since bloodstains are also hard to remove,” Circa told Reuters.
The unconventional artist now travels to his town’s health clinic once every three months to have his blood extracted and stores it in a cooler in his Nueva Ecija studio.
“My artwork is very important to me because they come from me, it is from my own blood, my DNA is part of it,” said Circa.

One of his plans for the new year is to create the largest blood painting ever on a 328-foot canvas, setting a world record for the feat.
