How do you know when a guilty pleasure has become a full-blown addiction?
For porn perusers, one expert says there are 10 telltale signs harmless viewing has crossed into dangerous dependency — with her advice going viral ahead of New Year’s.
Sandy Brown, who authored the book “Porn Addict’s Wife: Surviving Betrayal and Taking Back Your Life,” took to TikTok back in August to enlighten her followers. Now, her advice has resurfaced as millions make resolutions to kick their naughtiest habits in 2024.
Not that your average knuckle shuffling connoisseur needs to suddenly change their ways, Brown stresses.
“I’m going to warn you right now that occasional watching of porn does not make an addiction, and any one of these signs by themselves does not necessarily mean a porn addiction either,” Brown stressed, saying there was nothing wrong with taking a load off by enjoying the occasional kinky clip.
But add up all the time spent on so-called stress busting, and the content creator claimed that some viewers could be facing problems that threaten personal relationships — and even pose financial ruin.
Here, the expert’s ten ways to tell you’ve got a problem with porn.
1. You’ve lost interest in having sex
Brown says a person who’s become dependent on porn won’t have the motivation to make love to their partner. Instead, they’re likely glued to their smartphone or laptop, “very busy” having sex with themselves.
2. Your sexual tastes have changed
Brown believes that porn addiction can change what a person is into in the bedroom, possibly making them more experimental with positions and roleplay.
However, porn can also alter the expectations a person has of their partner, potentially pressuring them into doing things they may not feel comfortable with.
3. Your performance isn’t what it used to be
The life coach claimed a dependency on X-rated content can lead a person to become “very selfish” during a lovemaking session.
She warned women to keep an eye out if their once-generous partner has slowly started putting his needs first.
4. You’re much more moody than you used to be
Porn addiction can cause a person to lash out at their loved ones, Brown believes. A person reliant on raunchy videos is also likely to become “emotionally distant” with a partner.
“When you’re using too much porn, you’re not there in your relationship, you’re distant and withdrawn and really moody,” she declared.
5. You’ve become secret and defensive
If you’ve started lying or over-explaining when asked a simple, straightforward question by a partner, Brown posits that it could be a sign that your porn proclivity has crossed from harmless habit to dangerous addiction.
6. You’re becoming anti-social
Brown believes that if a man or woman is preferring to spend their nights at home in front of a screen — as opposed to going out with friend or on dates — it’s possible that they’re developing a dependency on adult entertainment.
Be particularly aware if you’re always “finding excuses” to stay home so you can sneak in some sexy solo screen time.
7. You’re becoming more critical of your partner’s appearance
Given the insanely sculpted bodies that both male and female porn performers possess, an addict may start expecting their real-life partner to resemble on-screen stars.
8. You’re online until the wee hours
Porn addiction may not only interfere with the way you make love to your partner, it could also stop you from getting adequate sleep or prevent you from pursuing proper past times.
If you’re frequently feeling tired because you’ve spent hours watching porn the previous night, it may be a sign that you’ve become hooked.
9. You’re protective of your devices
Brown says if a person is “guarded” about their devices and always has their phone close to them, they may have something to hide.
Similarly, if you’re putting passcodes on your phone to stop a snooping partner from seeing your sleazy cyber searches, you may want to seek help.
10. You’re spending a lot of money on adult entertainment
While a lot of internet porn is free, addicts often don’t have a problem shelling out cash for personalized content or OnlyFans subscriptions.
If you’re not being honest with your partner about your spending on porn, it could spell a serious problem for both your relationship and your personal finances, she said.
