The phantom phenomenon of ghosting AKA disappearing from a relationship without cause, trace or closure is as old as the insistent beating of the first human heart.
Though we’ve been hunting and haunting each other since the beginning of time, the term ghosting was officially added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary in 2017, defined as “the act or practice of abruptly cutting off all contact with someone (such as a former romantic partner) usually without explanation by no longer accepting or responding to phone calls, instant messages, etc.”
Prince, AKA the king of side burns and broken hearts, captured the feeling of being ghosted in his 1982 banger “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore” decades before the nomenclature existed.
In a more recent pursuit of/plea for clarity, industrious TikToker Stephanie D’Agostini created an exit survey to determine what made her partners ghost.
Basic psychology suggests fear, low emotional intelligence and the cheap convenience of technology all conspire to make ghosting preferable to direct communication and ultimately, the true compassion of clarity.

Astrology 101: Your guide to the stars
Built for ghosting, the average Gemini is quick to court and quick to forget. Ruled by trickster planet Mercury, Gemini is the sort to play games, flirt without follow through, and send mixed signals and multiple nudes to multiple folks.
Mutable, easily distracted and apt to change their minds and cancel plans, they abandon ship and people when something shinier captures their attention and/or affections. They need the freedom to change course and keeping their options open often looks like double booking and/or flat out disappearing.
A classic example of a Gemini ghost is Russell Brand who all but dematerialized to ex-wife Katy Perry. The “Hot N Cold’ singer, who has since moved on with partner and nude paddler Orlando Bloom, admitted of Brand, “He hasn’t spoken to me since he texted me saying he was filing for divorce.”
Brand doubled down on the erasure by removing the matching tattoo he and Perry shared. Because Perry is a Scorpio with approximately no chill, and nary a scrap of subtlety she immortalized her ex’s exit in the song “Ghost.”
Freedom loving, good time having and commitment eschewing, Sagittarius folk ghost when their plans to keep it light, keep it open and keep it casual are compromised. When it stops being fun, they start looking for an escape hatch and will go to extreme measures for extrication.
Examples of this include actor Jake Gyllenhaal who famously ghosted Taylor Swift on her twenty first birthday and who continues to haunt her songbook.
Another archer who made good with a disappearing act is Katie Holmes who after six years of marriage to Tom Cruise reportedly left him without notice, changed her phone number, left no forwarding address and would only communicate through her legal team.
Many speculated that Cruise’s devotion to Scientology was Holmes’s dip out. Interestingly, the church itself is a bit of an institution of ghosting as it supports disconnection, the sanctioned severance between members and infidels.
If the golden rule is to be applied to the world of dating than a ghosting Aquarius is simply treating others like they want to be treated; namely left alone to fend for themselves in a moonscape of thought bubbles, unanswered questions, unrealized fantasies and emotional vapor.
If you’re looking for a water bearer ode to the art of disappearing may I suggest apex Aquarius the Weeknd’s 2018 bop “I Was Never There.” No, no you weren’t and you never will be, Abel.
