California pizza lovers are certainly eating well, with a new list revealing three of the top five pizzerias in the United States reside in the Golden State.
The Italian website 50 Top Pizza revealed their list for the best American pizzerias, which was topped for the fifth year in a row by Anthony Mangieri’s’s Una Pizza Napoletana in New York City.
But tied for second were a pair of California pizza spots — William Joo’s Pizzeria Sei in Los Angeles and Tony Gemignani’s Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco.
The other Californian pizza spot in the Top 5 was Truly Pizza in Dana Point. A joint run by Donna Baldwin, John Arena, Michael Vakneen and Chris Decker.
This was Pizzeria Sei’s (8781 W Pico Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90035) second year in a row in the #2 position behind Una Pizza Napoletana.
Joo opened the pizzeria in February 2022, and it quickly became noticed for its Neo Neapolitan pizza a.k.a. Tokyo Style pizza.
The site praised Sei for its knowledgable wait staff, the “highly hydrated” dough with “prolonged fermentations and use of selected flours.”
“The result is a light pizza, with a airy yet crispy base, characterized by great technical precision. The toppings balance high-quality Italian ingredients with Japanese influences, with carefully crafted and clean pairings,” the site added.
Pizzeria Sei largely offers takeout and delivery service, with limited dine-in availability and a maximum of four pizzas per order.
San Francisco’s Tony’s Pizza Napoletana (1570 Stockton St, San Francisco, CA 94133) opened in 2009 and has been featured on this list, praised for its unique variety of pies on the menu.

Gemignani, a 13-time World Pizza Champion, boasts a whopping seven pizza ovens that crank out 12 different pizza styles.
“The service is efficient even under stress, the pizzeria maintains a popular and family-like character where everyone feels comfortable when they walk in,” the site said of Napoletana.
Dana Point’s Truly Pizza (24402 Del Prado Ave Dana Point, CA 92629) also won the coveted Pizza of the Year from the site, for their Umami Mushroom pizza pie.
“The Umami Mushroom is more creative, a white pizza with marinated and roasted mushrooms, toasted sesame oil, seeds on the crust, and bonito flakes on top, adding depth and movement to each bite,” they said.
They also praised the fully-outdoor environment, adding, “With the California blue sky and such a well-maintained environment, Truly Pizza manages to combine technical precision, quality ingredients, and a pleasant sense of outdoor conviviality.”
There were three more California pizzerias in the Top 50 – Flour House in San Luis Obispo (No. 22), Nardo in Huntington Beach (No. 25) and San Diego’s Tribute Pizza (No. 38).
Their subsequent list of “excellent pizzerias” outside of the Top 50 included California locales such as Croccante Artisan Pizza in Napa, Flour + Water in San Francisco, Grazie Grazie Pizzeria in Laguna Beach, Milo & Olive in Santa Monica and both Pizzeria de Laura and Rose Pizzeria in Berkeley.
