Costco yanks beloved treat from food court menu — and a replacement is receiving dismal reviews

Costco Wholesale’s plans to drop the beloved churro from its food court menu threw fans into a deep-fried depression last month.

Now, reviews for the apparent replacement snack are in, leaving the internet once again struggling to cope.

Rumors that the beloved deep-fried cinnamon sugar-dusted snack, which had been selling for $1.49 at the club food court, would be replaced with a relatively ordinary chocolate chip cookie first began swirling in early December on Reddit, where a user promising inside knowledge of the Issaquah, Wash.-based retailer’s plans first dropped the dirty bomb.

“Noooooo — where else am i supposed to get a churro? I can get cookies anywhere but churros? Only at Costco,” one Redditor cried.

“[I] hope not. thats my fav treat there for 20 years. I WILL complain,” another upset user chimed in.

Now, it appears as if the discount giant is deadly serious.

One eagle-eyed Redditor recently noticed an updated menu at their local Costco in the Pacific Northwest, according to Spruce Eats, while reviews of the replacement dessert have slowly begun to appear online, with at least one outlet making the comparison to the decadent Crumbl cookies suddenly cropping up in suburban shopping centers across the country.

Sold as a double chocolate chunk cookie, the moderately-sized snack costs $2.49 and packs a whopping 750 calories per serving.

“The consistency is perfect. Crunchy on the edges — a light crisp on the outside and warm and gooey on the inside,” said one reviewer.

However, they said, the whole package was just “too much” — and that even on an empty stomach, one whole cookie was more than they could manage. In the end, they preferred to spend that $2.50 elsewhere.

“This is the price of almost two 1/4 lb hot dogs and two sodas and…the price of 1/2 of a rotisserie chicken,” they pointed out.

“I will never order/eat this cookie again,” they fumed.

Meanwhile, multiple, ongoing conversations on sites like Reddit have centered around the perceived overall decline of the churro throughout the years — possibly leading Costco to make the unpopular decision to discontinue it completely.

Many Redditors claimed that they hadn’t been fans for years — not since a pandemic-era reinvention, when the classic, straight-ridged churro, retailing for $1, was suddenly replaced in 2021 with a doughy twist that was 50% more expensive.

“The churros have been dead to me since they moved to the twisted ones anyway,” one Redditor confessed in the most-upvoted comment on a recent post.

“I’m sorry, but the churros became obsolete when the ‘50% more expensive,’ ‘new’ and ‘much less improved’ ‘twisted’ version appeared during COVID,” another said.

But many fans aren’t hearing it.

“I don’t care how ‘good it used to be compared to this one,’ I love it now,” one said.

Meanwhile, the high-level discussion has carried over to other social media sites like TikTok, where food-fluencer @snackwithzach recently snagged nearly 600,000 views on a video announcing the sad-making switcharoo.

“Dropped to my knees in the parking lot and screamed,” one follower said.
