I got a surprise discount at my grocery store — I was shocked to learn why

Age isn’t just a number when it comes to the grocery bill.

A shopper felt horrifically age-shamed after realizing that a supermarket had given them a “senior discount” even though they were under 50 years old, as documented in a post raising eyebrows on Reddit.

“Checked my receipt after noticing discount after discount to find this … I’m 48,” exclaimed the mortified customer in the caption to the post, which was shared to the forum’s “mildly infuriating thread.”

The attached photo shows the document, with “SENIOR DISCOUNT” in capital letters at the top.

Meanwhile, there is a slight price slash for every item, including the sweet pickled corned beef brisket ($0.69 discount) natural honey ham ($0.15), fruit juice ($0.12), blueberries ($0.15) and peeled baby carrots ($0.10)

This brought the total discount to $2.05 off the overall bill, which ran the shopper $50.75 for 11 items when factoring in the age-based deduction.

While this concession wasn’t exactly a steal, the user took umbrage given that they were well under the threshold for being a senior citizen — which is generally considered 65 in the US.

However, Reddit users accused the shopper of looking a gift horse in the mouth.

“I mean that’s a win in my book, get a discount you don’t deserve,” declared one, while another wrote, “Yeah mildly infuriating is missing out on a discount you deserve. Getting one you don’t is free money.”

A third theorized that a grocery employee had given the shopper the senior discount as a favor to them despite knowing they weren’t the requisite age.

“I can just picture a cashier thinking “hell yeah I’m gonna save so many people money cuz this hell hole doesn’t pay me enough!” they quipped. “Then someone being upset that someone gave them a discount that implied they’re old. Hell I’d be happy to be called a turd burgler for a 5% turd burgler discount.

One Redditor even told a story about receiving an elderly cost concession just because they were a loyal customer.

“I travel for work and I hit the same bagel place every day for breakfast and the dude started giving me the senior discount because I tipped them well,” they claimed. “I was like 30 at the time.”

In addition, while a 48-year-old doesn’t qualify as a senior citizen in most instances, it’s not totally out of the realm of reason.

Certain stores such as Fred Meyer, Hyvee and Fry’s Food Stores offer senior discounts for shoppers who are 55 and older.

Meanwhile, customers only have to be 50 to receive this price perk at certain chain restaurants such as Krispy Kreme, Steak ‘n Shake and Cici’s Pizza, although the latter deal varies by location.
