New Hampshire this year has detected the first batch of mosquitoes that have tested positive for the Jamestown Canyon virus.
State health officials announced Monday that the first batch was collected at Atkinson in early August. The second batch arrived a few days later from Hampstead.
Jamestown Canyon virus is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito, and there has been an increase in reports of human cases in North America over the past several years.
New Hampshire saw its first report of arboviral disease in 2013. Since then the state has identified 19 cases.
The risk level for those two cities was raised to a low level.
Health officials say an infected person may develop no symptoms, or only very mild symptoms, such as flu-like illness or fatigue. See CDC for more information on Jamestown Canyon Virus.
