Mom praised for refusing to call her young daughter ‘pretty’ while wearing makeup: ‘Little ears are always listening’

It’s a pretty great parenting move.

Maggie Katz, a mom-of-two and content creator, recently revealed that she refuses to use the word “pretty” when letting her daughter use makeup.

In a viral TikTok video that scored over 67,000 views, Katz explained that she tells her 3-year-old daughter Lila that she looks “so fancy” after applying a bit of makeup in order to teach her that women don’t need cosmetics to look beautiful.

“Why we do makeup?” Katz asks Lila in the clip. “‘Cause it’s fun, and we get to look fancy.”

When the little one agrees, Katz reinforces that she is “pretty no matter what.”

“The words we hear growing up have an impact,” she captioned the video, in which she also wrote that “little ears are always listening.”

In the comments, Katz continued to explain that she loves playing around with makeup and hairstyles, but she wanted her daughter to know that she just does it for fun, “not because I ‘need’ to.”

“And then watching her start to understand that she’s perfect as is, but that’s it’s okay to want to play with makeup and ‘look fancy’ too has been so impactful,” she added.

Fellow parents applauded Katz’s parenting technique, saying they’ll be adopting the word “fancy” from now on.

“I’ve been trying to think of a way how to explain why I do certain things to my girls without making them believe they ‘need” to do it,’” wrote one person. “This is amazing.”

“I am also adopting ‘fancy’ for both me and my daughter,” another said, describing it as a “brilliant” idea.

“I started saying this. And now my daughter loves going to Ulta so we can be fancy. (She’s 3 and just likes holding the bag),” someone else added.

“THANK YOU!!! I put on makeup occasionally for super special events and I’ve struggled with how to explain it besides saying it’s fun to be artistic sometimes. I’ll be using this,” one user commented.

“I needed this as a kid,” another TikTokker chimed in.
