Nutritional drinks company Lyons Magnus expanded a voluntary recall of certain varieties of popular products, including oat drinks Oatly, Optimum Nutrition Protein Powder and Glucerna Shake, because of the potential for microbial contamination, company and federal officials said this week.
The company said in a statement on July 28 that no illness or complaint has been registered related to the recalled products. A company statement on Wednesday announced that more products had been recalled, did not say whether any became ill, and a spokesperson declined to comment beyond the news release.
The company said in its statement that the Food and Drug Administration posted a list of 89 products, including lots and case numbers, after “continued collaboration and consultation” with the agency. Some of the recalled products were distributed nationally, the company said.
The statement said a “root cause analysis” indicated that the products did not meet “commercial sterility specifications.”
FDA officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday evening.
Brands recalled include Organic Valley Milk and Stumptown Cold Brew coffee varieties.
The company said the recalled products could be contaminated with potentially harmful organisms including Cronobacter sakazaki and Clostridium botulinum. Cronobacter saczakii is a bacterium that can cause life-threatening infection or inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spine. According to the World Health Organization, Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that makes dangerous toxins that can cause a severe form of food poisoning.
“Although Clostridium botulinum has not been found in the products, consumers are cautioned not to consume any of the recalled products, even if they do not look or smell bad,” the company said in a statement. and drug administration. “Consumers are also advised not to consume any products that are beyond their ‘Best Buy’ date,” the statement said.
According to the statement, symptoms of Cronobacter sakazaki, which are rare, can include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infection. Clostridium botulinum can bring illness and be fatal anywhere from six hours to two weeks after eating contaminated food, the statement said. Symptoms may include poor vision, drooping eyelids, difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness.
