The first over-the-counter birth control pill in the US is now available.
Online sales for Opill, a progestin-only pill (POP), began Monday, and so far the estrogen-free pills are available to purchase on Amazon and directly from Opill.com.
Per the website, once the drugs are in stock, they’ll be available for purchase online at Walmart and Walgreens, as well as in-store at Target and CVS.
One month’s supply will cost $19.99, while the recommended three-month supply costs $49.99. A six-month supply is also available on Opill.com for $89.99.
Orders will be fulfilled within 24-48 hours of the time of purchase — excluding weekends and holidays — and will usually arrive in 3-5 business days. Two-day delivery is also offered at an additional cost.
Opill is FSA/HSA eligible and no health insurance or prescription is needed. And there’s no need to remember to place a new order when you’re about to run out.
If you subscribe to Opill, the company will automatically charge your payment method approximately 14 days before your current pack ends, though you can pause or cancel at any time.
Additionally, the company assures that your shipment will be discreet.
“Your privacy is extremely important to us, so we take great care to ensure that your order is shipped in discreet packaging. You can trust that we use plain, unbranded packaging for all shipments,” the FAQ page says.
Opill has been available with a prescription since 1973, but last July, the Food and Drug Administration approved the once-a-day pill to be used and sold without a prescription.
Opill is an older class of contraceptive, sometimes called minipills, that contain a single synthetic hormone, progestin, and generally carry fewer side effects than the more popular combination of estrogen and progestin pills.
While this might be the first for the US, birth control pills are available without a prescription across much of South America, Asia and Africa.
