MOSCOW, July 12 (Reuters) – Russia has reported its first case of monkeypox, Rospotrebnadzor, a consumer safety watchdog, said on Tuesday.

The watchdog said in a statement that the disease was found in a young man who had returned from a trip to European countries. The risk of infection to others was limited, it said.

“The disease is progressing in a mild form. There is no threat to life,” said Rospotrebnadzor.

Monkeypox is a viral disease that causes flu-like symptoms and skin sores. It is endemic in some parts of Africa.

In more than 50 countries where monkeypox is not endemic, outbreaks of the viral disease have been reported as confirmed cases exceed 7,600.
