Waitress called ‘rude’ after asking if couple wanted split bills

A waitress has been shocked after a “laughable” handwritten note was left on a receipt from a couple she served.

The woman took to Reddit to share a picture of the bill, which came to a total of $65.80.

At the bottom of the bill, the customer had written: “No tip because it was very rude to ask my wife and I if we wanted separate checks???”

The waitress was surprised the man, who she said appeared to be in his late 50’s to early 60’s with “much younger” wife, had the “audacity” to write the note with her pen.

The diners said they didn’t leave a tip because they felt the waitress was rude for asking if they wanted to split the bill.

She explained it was restaurant policy to ask diners if the bill was to be split — a rule that came about after a staff member had an awkward interaction with two parents dining with their kids.

“The woman started freaking out because the server assumed that her and the man were still together and was going on and on about how just because they look like a family doesn’t mean that they’re (paying on) one check,” the waitress explained.

“That is why we ask, because we want to prevent that situation from happening again.”

The waitress said she wasn’t upset about not getting a tip, saying she didn’t expect it and always gave her best.

Her problem was with the fact that asking about split bills had never been an issue before.

Social media users were split over what had happened, with some believing it was rude while others disagreed.

“Isn’t it standard practice to ask if everything is on one ticket or not? I am literally asked this any time I am with more than one other adult,” one social media user said.

Another added: “This is the kind of thing that’s so ridiculous, it’s laughable. I can’t believe there are even people like that who exist in the same realm as us.

“If they didn’t want to tip, they could’ve just paid the bill and left like every other sane person would’ve – but noooo, gotta make sure they come up with some sorry excuse, mixed in with an insult, just so that they can sleep soundly at night.”

Another said the man was a “poor sod fighting self esteem issues.”

But, others said they understood why the man was frustrated.

“I just get annoyed because people assume my and my boyfriend aren’t together because he is much older than me and a different race,” the social media user said.

“The amount of rudeness I get from being interracial couple is very annoying after some time. Also, you assume that it’s one cheque unless they tell you they want separate ones.”

“Where is this place? Never seen that before. On dates, double dates, bro dates, or corporate dinners, they always assume single check unless you state otherwise,” another said.
