Study researchers followed and analyzed participants for a dozen or so years Health records for cancer, heart disease and deaths from any cause.
The researchers found that any combination of aerobic-based activity performed for the recommended amount of time per week was associated with a 13% lower risk of death from any cause than doing no activity at all.
Playing racquet sports had the greatest benefits for cardiovascular problems: a 27% reduction in the risk of death from heart disease and a 16% reduction in premature death. The study noted that the greatest reduction (19%) in cancer risk was associated with running, while running reduced the risk of premature death by 15%.
The study found that all activities were associated with a somewhat lower risk of death.
“Participation in any activity was associated with a lower mortality rate than those who did not participate in each activity, including moderate-intensity activities,” wrote study author Eleanor Watts, a postdoctoral fellow in epidemiology at the National Cancer Institute. National Institute of Health.
Studies can only show an association, not full cause and effect.
