With the new congestion pricing, my commuting expenses are going to be unaffordable. Can I ask for a raise to cover the cost increase if my employer is requiring me to come into the office?

There are so many issues with congestion pricing for NYC, but no one is talking about the impact on employee commuting costs.

The problem is that your employer may suggest that you can save a ton of money by taking public transportation — which is one of the goals of congestion pricing.

Regardless, with such a material change in costs it does provide you with a legitimate reason to at least have a discussion with your boss about compensation.

Alternatively, maybe organize an office carpool.

I’d like to get your take on the value of an interviewee thanking the person or panel for their time after a job interview. I’m not a fan of this for two reasons. Firstly, it sounds artificial, as if this was some advice from “Acing Interviews for Dummies” or something. Secondly, if I do my part in the interview properly and confidently, people should be thanking me for my time. Is there truth to this?
You can certainly take that approach, but why would you?

What’s in it for you?

The interviewers have one position to fill and many applicants to consider, and since it is customary to thank the prospective employer for their consideration, it’s easy to “ace” this part of the process.

So, don’t be a “dummy.”

Play the game and don’t let your ego get in the way of the ultimate goal.
