Gen Z or Millennial? This simple TikTok test will tell which group you belong to

Zillennials — old enough to occasionally find themselves lumped in with their avocado toast-loving elders, young enough that they get asked to explain TikTok at work — need wonder no more which generation they actually belong to.

And it’s all thanks to — surprise! — a viral TikTok video, posted by user @ludknee, where she performs a “test” which she claims will tell whether someone is Gen Z or a millennial.

In the November 26 video, Lundy questions her friend who is sitting across the table asking her to do a series of movements to determine which generation she belongs to.

“Testing my bestfriend to see if she’s a Millennial or Gen Z,” she captioned the video, which has garnered 3.7 million views and 219,400 likes as of Tuesday afternoon.

Lundy asks the girl to use her hands to mime the following movements: answering and hanging up a phone, taking a photo, rolling down a car window and making a heart with her hands. The girl was also asked to stand up and show what kind of pants she’s wearing.

The video showed that millennials are likely to mime these actions using an analog version, such as using a landline-style phone, holding an imaginary camera with two hands and using the index photo to snap the shot, manually winding a car window down, and using the thumbs as the point for the heart while all the fingers come together to form the top part. The millennial girl was also sporting skinny jeans.

At the end of the video, Lundy showed what she believed a Gen Z would respond with all these movements, and as expected, it’s a more modern approach.

Lundy claimed that Gen Z simply uses the palm of their hand to indicate holding a phone and uses their thumb to mime pressing a button for answering the phone, hanging up the phone and taking a picture. She also mimicked pressing one button to roll down a car window, and used just the index and middle fingers to make a heart with her hands.

However, she clarified in the comments that both her and her friend are millennial, and they just wanted to partake in a challenge.

Out of the over 1,200 comments on the video, many admitted that they still do things the so-called millennial way — and a lot of users were upset over the Gen Z heart.

“My fingers physically cannot do the gen z heart,” one comment with 14,900 likes said.

“the gen z heart sign is embarrassingly hard for me to do,” someone agreed.

“Idk why but I don’t like the gen z heart even tho I’m gen z,” another wrote.

“The gen z heart pisses me off… shape is ugly and what to do you do with the extra fingers, they are just flying in the air??!” an angry user exclaimed.

“The millennial jeans and heart just look so much better though. Gen z heart is so upsetting,” one shared.

“this is LATER gen z or even gen alpha. I’m 2000 and I’d do everything here like the millennials lol,” a Gen Z user stated.

“Damn I’m gen z but I still do the millennial answers,” another said.

“i haven’t had to manually unroll a window in years, but that would still be my default,” one person wrote.

“[To be fair] the electronic actions do not display the premise enough. They are vague. So the traditional answer holds it’s meaning and is more communicative,” a user reasoned.
