A UK professional baby namer is sharing monikers that moms love but don’t feel “cool enough” to use.
SJ Strum, 43, conducted an Instagram poll asking moms to name their “guilty pleasure” baby names.
She received more than 7,000 responses, which revealed some unusual choices for girls and boys.
The top two “more daring names” that parents love, but don’t feel confident enough to give their child, are Honey and Calliope for girls and Wilder and Atlas for boys.
“People want a name that’s not popular, but everyone likes it,” Strum, a mom of three from Richmond, Surrey, told SWNS. “People think, ‘Am I cool enough to call my child a daring name?’”
Strum noted that Honey may be on the rise thanks to British broadcaster Fearne Cotton, who named her 8-year-old daughter Honey.
Strum thinks Calliope would be more common, but people steer clear of it because they “know it might be mispronounced.”
Other top “whimsical” girl names include Tallulah, Tigerlily, Lavender and Clover.
For boys, Strum’s favorite choices are Ziggy, Rex, Cosmo, Peregrine, Chase, Wulfric — shortened to Wolfie — and Ernest.
“Just because a name is less used doesn’t mean it’s less liked,” Strum reasoned.
She suggested that parents shy away from using a name they love because it’s too unique — and opt for it as a middle name instead.
“With the middle name, you can be a bit braver. You don’t have to say it, and it’s not asked often, but you’ll know it’s there,” Strum explained. “If you throw it away, ask yourself — will you regret it?”
A different professional baby name consultant recommends parents who are considering giving their child an unusual name say their favorite names aloud in a variety of tones, use them in a sentence, and jot them down alongside the names of family members.
Some 2024 baby name trends include ones that sound cool on social media; spring-inspired monikers and gender-neutral names.
