Think of it as a Michelin Star for affordability.
Enjoying an affordable gourmet meal in NYC might seem like a paradox in light of soaring inflation.
Fortunately, ahead of dropping its official list of stars, the Michelin Guide has unveiled 11 new NYC Bib Gourmand — affordable restaurants — entries, so that cash-strapped gourmets can keep their bellies full sans emptying their bank account.
For the uninitiated, Bib Gourmand eateries are defined as “serving good for incredible value,” per the Michelin Guide.
That “good value” per the guide, equates to $50 for two courses and a drink or dessert not including tax and tip, according to Eater.
The price had been $40 for a decade until the powers that be bumped it up to $49 to adjust for inflation (and to perhaps ensure that McDonald’s with its now $18 Big Mac meal never makes the cut).
However, unlike the grotty dollar pizzerias and other budget options, the Big Apple’s 11 Bib Gourmands promise “inventive cuisine celebrating rich cultural traditions under the lens of gastronomy.”
Notable entries include quaint Crown Heights diner Agi’s Counter, vegetarian restaurant Superiority Burger, and KRU, which century-old Thai classics refracted through a 2023 lens.
As The Post reported, diners notoriously waited hours for the quinoa-based vegan patties at Superiority Burger during the summer months.
There’s also C as in Charlie, Chef Eric JaeHo Cho wild BBQ-Korean fusion restaurant featuring such culinary mashups as a “Seoul’sbury steak” with kalbi jus and gruyere grits.
The 11 new additions are:
- 8282–Cuisine: Korean
- Agi’s counter — Cuisine: Creative
- Alta Calidad — Cuisine: Mexican
- C as in Charlie — Cuisine: Fusion
- Café Mars — Cuisine: Contemporary
- Florā — Cuisine: Italian
- KRU — Cuisine: Thai
- Peppercorn Station — Cuisine: Chinese
- Potluck Club — Cuisine: Chinese
- Pranakhon — Cuisine: Thai
- Superiority Burger — Cuisine: Vegetarian
These affordable eateries round out the 102 total NYC restaurants that made this year’s list of Bib Gourmands (which includes Bibs from years past as well).
The full list of Bibs will be released on November 7 along with the bonafide Michelin stars for 2023.
While certainly a boon for gourmets on a budget, Bib Gourmands are often viewed as a participation trophy for chefs as they signify that said restaurant is out of contention for a Michelin Star.
