Is work more important than a workout?
A furious debate has erupted online after a Gen Z worker told their boss that they were unable to make an early meeting due to a gym class.
The angry employer wrote to “Demoted” podcast hosts Natalie Marie and Ross Pomerantz to ask whether the young worker should be “allowed” to skip the 8.a.m. meeting.
Marie and Pomerantz shared their responses on their podcast, with footage of their discussion posted to TikTok.
“You just started this job. I don’t give a flying s— about your workout class. Also, an 8 a.m. workout class is too late. Work out at six, maybe seven,” Marie declared, siding with the boss.
Pomerantz agreed, saying: “To monopolize your calendar for things that I would consider to be personal time, that’s gonna be a ‘no’ for me dog.You’re going to have to give up some things.”
Marie then chimed in: “You’re not really allowed to do that when you’re first starting your career I’m sorry.”
However, hundreds of Zoomers blasted both the boss and the podcast hosts, saying they were not required to work outside allocated hours.
One TikTokker named Alexandre Evidente gave his own POV, putting himself into the young employee’s shoes to share what he would be thinking.
He noted that the worker’s contract was for a position between 9 a.m. and 5 pm.
“Okay, so let’s just say I skip the gym. When can I expect you to reimburse me for my class?” Evidente wondered in his video, which amassed an incredible 34 million views. “And are you going to be paying me from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., or at the very least, let me leave at 4 p.m.?”
“I have commitments outside of work,” Evidente added, continuing to imagine himself as the Gen Z employee asked to attend the early morning meeting. “I care about my health. Sure, I could make a sacrifice for an 8 a.m. meeting, had I known about this a week before.”
People in the comments section agreed with his stance, with one saying that “I’m with you, 9-5 is 9-5.”
“It’s not a generational issue, they want to milk the new hire,” another declared.
“My gym has a $40 cancellation fee so best believe i will not be at that meeting,” a third person fumed.
One commenter even gave some advice to employees: “NEVER tell them why. You can’t make it due to a prior commitment and that’s all they get.”
“Don’t normalize working outside work hours. Once you give in, there will be a second and third time.”
