FDA recalls butter brand over potential illness caused by E.coli, mold and yeast

Don’t spread this butter around.

A popular plant-based butter has been recalled in ten states for E. coli, yeast and mold, announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Miyoko’s Creamery European Style Salted Plant Milk Butter was recalled by its manufacturer, Prosperity Organic Foods, Inc. The organic butter is made from cashew milk and plant oils.

The recall was assigned a Class II risk level on Friday, meaning the product can cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.” The recall began after Massachusetts-based supermarket chain Market Basket notified customers of high yeast levels that did not meet quality standards, according to WGRZ.

The FDA’s enforcement report lists yeast, mold and E. coli as reasons for the recall. E. coli infections can cause serious complications and severe stomach issues. Some strains cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and put consumers at risk of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening condition that leads to kidney failure.

Young children and older adults are particularly vulnerable to severe illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The FDA did not provide specific instructions, but as a Class II recall, the safest option is to toss or return it, as a Class II is a “moderate-risk.”

Prosperity Organic Foods Inc., the Boise, Idaho-based maker of the plant-based butter, initiated the voluntary recall on Sept. 11, according to the FDA’s enforcement report. A voluntary recall typically happens when the company recalls its product before the government safety agency is forced to issue a formal, legally compelled mandate.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. Symptoms of E. Coli typically appear 3 to 4 days after swallowing the bacteria, and most adults recover within 5 to 7 days.

Miyoko’s prides itself on offering a clean ingredient profile: 100% vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, soy-free, and non-GMO. The brand first started in 1990 with plant-based cheeses and launched its European-style cultured butter in 2016.

Consumers who purchased the product should not eat it and should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
