As we move through the sacred season of the witch, the days get darker and our shadows get louder, an ideal window to reflect on the sticky parts of our personhood.
“Halloween brings us into Scorpio season, the realm of Pluto, ruling over all things shadow — this is a perfect time to gaze into the eyes of your shadow self and ask what it wants, why it is in pain, and how you can help to heal and soothe its wounds,” author and tarot reader Kerry Ward told The Post.
According to Ward, when we embrace and integrate rather than deny our shadow self, we reclaim its suppressed power.
“This reading, using my upcoming, healing and comforting Light In The Dark tarot cards, will bring you a message to act upon directly from your shadow self. Ready?”

Fire signs – Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Five of Cups
“Your shadow self is defined by grief and wants you to release this emotion, fully, deeply, and privately,” shared Ward.
She notes that while some pain is meant to be shared and lightened by the collective, other pain requires the sanctity of solitude.
“Do that this Halloween — grieve your losses, regrets and lost loved ones. Be grateful for what they gave you, what you’ve learnt, how your character is shaped by these powerful life changes.”
After you let the pain move through you, release it to the air with your breath.
“You are safe and whole and ready to live and love again. Life continues, join its flow.”
Earth signs – Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Eight of Coins
“Your shadow self is defined by perfectionism, a gnawing self-criticism that undermines many of your greatest achievements with regret or recrimination,” said Ward.
She notes that this shadow was likely born in childhood, and to address it, you must return and reexamine these traumatic events through the lens of deep compassion.
“And then deliberately live more spontaneously and in flow with what’s in front of you. Do your best and be glad at that. Force this mindset until it starts to feel more natural, drown out your inner critic and judge with enthusiastic and uplifting encouragement and self-talk,” Ward said.
Fake it till’ you make it, folks.
Air signs – Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Ten of Swords
Reading air signs to filth this Halloween, Ward shared, “Your shadow self lives in the spirit graveyard with all of the people, places, events, and emotions you’ve ‘ghosted’ and act like they never existed (this is an Air sign ‘thing’).”
Acknowledgment is the first step, so Ward recommends getting honest about what you’ve suppressed and where you’ve severed relationships.
“You are very good at moving on and cutting ties, sometimes too good. Everyone and everything deserves evaluation, a review, a chance to be processed and offer a life lesson or wisdom.”
She suggests letting the past linger and fade rather than forcing erasure.
“It doesn’t work. They just move into dreams and waking visions. So, visit that graveyard and make peace with the past.”
Water signs – Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Eight of Wands
“Your shadow self lingers and weaves itself around your relationships. Nagging at you and offering strange ideas, undermining thoughts and trust-breaking ideas,” shared Ward.
She urges water signs to revisit their early development and specifically, their relationships with parents and siblings.
“What was it like? How was trust and safety created? How was love shown? What did family look like and give you? The good and bad. Notice how these themes live in you now,” she advised.
Ward shared that the time is right to release yourself from the harmful patterns of the past.
“This will be an exercise in liberation.”
