It’s me. Hi. I’m the problem it’s me.
We all know, love and may be actively recovering from the effects of an entitled, self-aggrandizing blow hard.
Narcissist has become something of a buzz word in the last decade but cigar sucking Taurus shrink daddy Sigmund Freud was the first to coin the term in honor of the mythical hunter who fell in love with his own reflection.
Self-interest is essential to survival and as such we all exhibit narcissistic qualities to some degree. According to Freud, narcissism, like color, political ideologies, sexuality and sound exists on a spectrum with healthy narcissism on one end and Narcissistic Personality Disorder on the other extreme.
The latter is characterized by authoritarian behavior patterns, a lack of empathy and remorse, professional and personal jealousy, extreme grandiosity, and superficiality.
In a surprise to no one, and according to Dr. Drew Pinsky, celebrities suffer from narcissism at a higher rate than the general public.
Current research suggest that “productive narcissism” is present in the personalities of many of today’s most successful business owners and entrepreneurs. As “The Harvard Business Review,” argues, “It is narcissists who come closest to our collective image of great leaders. There are two reasons for this: they have compelling, even gripping, visions for companies, and they have an ability to attract followers.”
Cult like charisma and uncompromising vision, it tracks.
While narcissism crops up all around the zodiac wheel, there are some signs more than others that are predisposed to putting themselves first and ever atop a gilded, inflatable pyramid of importance. Read on to learn more.
Leo is ruled by the sun, the luminary the earth revolves around and Leos oft take this fact as metaphorical evidence of their own importance.
At their big cat best, the contagious confidence that Leos possess give the rest of us permission to both love ourselves and believe that we are worthy of the love of others.
Or in technical terms and in the words of psychologist Dr. Kristi K. Phillips, “Individuals with healthy self-image can balance high self-esteem with prosocial behaviors that nurture reciprocal relational dynamics.”
At worst, Leos operate from a place of wounded ego or deep insecurity and things gets dark, like black hole space vacuum dark, wherein no amount of praise, love, validation, sex or success is able to satisfy or stabilize them and as the man-eating lions of Tsavo National Park prove, starving lions are a very, very dangerous sort.
Examples of leonine narcissists include Napoleon Bonaparte and tech billionaire Larry Ellison who was damningly distilled by an executive of his Oracle company who said, “The difference between God and Larry is that God does not believe he is Larry.”
Capricorn is ruled by striving planet Saturn and by and large, sea goats are avowed to excellence and the steady ascent.
They know it ain’t easy to get to the top but they also don’t really respect anyone that isn’t willing to die trying.
Capricorns are goal oriented and this can translate to total self-absorption, an empathy deficit and a low key ruthless willingness to do anything, and conquer anyone, to get ahead. Looking at you Richard Nixon. A modern example of a celebrity sea goat self-aggrandizer is Mr. Tee Time Tiger Woods.
In the biography “Roaring Back: The Fall and Rise of Tiger Woods,” the philandering golf legend is described as, “A pathological narcissist.
All of his human relationships were transactional. If you couldn’t help him achieve his goals, he had no use for you. He’d walk past and look right through you.”
Ah, Aquarius. Hyper independence is a kind of self-involvement and water bearers tend to wear self-sufficiency like a war medal/merit badge a quality that can bleed into believing anyone that needs more than they do is somehow deficient, less than or feeble.
Aquarians are cherished for their objectivity and progressive ideals but it should be noted that detachment from emotion does not always suggest a power over it.
On the contrary, it can represent an inability to process and empathize, two hallmarks of healthy human being.
Proving the point are former president Franklin D. Roosevelt who struggled to separate his own self-interest and aggrandizement from that of the American people, Portuguese football manager José Mourinho who ordained himself “The Special One,” and Instagram influencer Draya Michelle who admits, “I’m an Aquarius. Yes, I believe we are superior.
At least this lot doesn’t play coy with their complex.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again; Aquarians are unfailingly original and that is a beautiful thing. They are special but not superior, a mantra I encourage all water bearers to commit to memory and to the bathroom mirror in their survivalist bunkers.
