Snark is the kind of word that sounds like what it is; conjuring images of pursed lips, rude thought bubbles, withering side eye and other stereotypes that follow the French like cigarette smoke and bread crumbs.
Merriam Webster defines snarky as, “sarcastic, impertinent, or irreverent in tone or manner,” and offers the synonyms crotchety and snappish.
Not to be confused with sarcasm which hinges on irony and eye rolls, snark is a touch more irreverent and a few clicks past unkind.
For many a GenZ the thumbs up emoji carries with it an air of hostile snark and of late they have called for its cultural culling.
In 1876 controversial child enthusiast Lewis Carroll made snark a noun with his nonsensical poem “The Hunting of the Snark,” which follows a sea faring expedition as they pursue an illusive creature for reasons unknown.
The snark is identified by his five marks; four out of five of which apply to the Capricorn archetype; he likes machines, cannot take a joke, is seriously ambitious and tastes like a crisp but too tight tweed waist coast. For this and other reasons, sea goats take the gold for snark.

There’s a snide/snark superiority to the Capricorn ilk, they work hard to be better than the rest and can be quick to remind others of this fact. They don’t care about being liked as much as their fellow signs and would prefer to be feared and respected than universally celebrated.
In essence, they’re fine not being everyone’s favorite because they know most people have bad taste. In the mind of a Cap, the road to the top is single lane, and their ain’t no love seat on the peak but rather a brittle stool fit for one.
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the karmic planet of back hands, stumbling stones and hard knocks. Known as the great teacher Saturn’s lessons sometime take the form of making people feel stupid or incompetent. Apropos of this tendency to cut one down to size, Saturn is the planet most similar in look and tendency to a sickle.
Rulers of the tenth house of legacies and public image, sea goats have a tendency to judge others and themselves on their adherence to a grueling work ethic and traditional hallmarks of success. This focus on striving and gaining can bring out the snark full force as they lose sight of how what they say can deeply affect/maim/alienate others.
More concerned with the tactical and the practical, sea goats often dismiss emotion as a lesser pursuit. Accessing and accepting vulnerability is not their strong suit and they use snark, sarcasm, stoicism and resting bitch face as the perfectly polished armor of their defense mechanisms.
