This surprising weight-loss claim could come in handy.
A British psychologist is raising eyebrows after declaring that eating with your non-dominant hand may result in weight loss.
Professor Richard Wiseman, who teaches at the University of Hertfordshire, made the claim on his “On Your Mind” podcast this week, saying the practice would likely lead to less food consumption.
“It means it actually takes longer and it’s more mindful to eat because you need to sort out coordination issues and so on,” the psychologist stated. “You end up eating less.
“It’s really simple, but actually pretty effective,” he added, saying that mindful eating was “one of the most enjoyable ways” to make portions smaller.
Wiseman also said that the “mirror theory,” devised by American psychologist Brad Bushman in the late 1990s, was another mindful eating tactic that has proved to be effective.
Back in 1998, Bushman conducted research whereby people ate food in front of a mirror. Participants “ate less of full-fat product[s] than did those in the no-mirror group,” the study found.
“As soon as people could see their own reflection, they became more self-conscious, and they shifted to the healthier food,” Wiseman explained of Bushman’s research.
“If you want to, then these are the sorts of, some people call them hacks, but psychological tips that can be quite impactful,” he declared.
The mindful eating tips may delight millions of Americans who are currently in a battle with the bulge.
A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that at least 35% of adults in 22 different U.S. states are obese.
The CDC noted that there were no states that had an adult obesity prevalence at or above 35% just 10 years ago, highlighting how quickly citizens have piled on the pounds.
